Steak with Shallot and Red Wine Sauce


This has been a really big week for my family.  My husband’s birthday was the 11th, yesterday I finished my PhD course and tomorrow is Valentine’s Day.  So what to do with the day in between?  Setting a very romantic mood Steak and red wine is almost a cliché.  But this shallow red-wine sauce is so lovely.  I love how fast and easy it is and it always looks really gorgeous. Honestly,  This took me (boiling the corn along side making the sauce and steak)  13 and a half minutes.  But it looks and tastes amazing.

If you are not a steak person, a little hint – the sauce goes really well with grilled portobello mushrooms 😉  I hope you try it and I know you will be converted – it is so fast, so easy and always comes out great!

Steak with Shallot and Red Wine Sauce (Serves 2) 

15 minutes (if steaks are medium, 20 min for steaks well-done)

  • 2 serloin steaks
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 6 brown shallots
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • Olive oil (1 tbsp for steaks, 1 for the shallots)

Quarter the shallots and simmer in some water for 3 minutes (this is for medium, you can do 5min for well done)

In the meantime, heat olive oil in a pan until quite hot

Sear the steaks for 3 minutes on each side

During this time, drain the shallots and keep to one side

Once the steaks are seared, place them in a warm (180C or 350F) until the rest of the recipe is done

In the same pan you cooked the steaks add 1 tbsp more olive oil and add the shallots

after 1 minute, add sugar and wine, bring to a low heat and simmer until reduced by half, it will be thick and a bit sticky

Take the steaks out of the oven and smother in sauce.
